Formed in 1986, DGI is one of the largest insulation specialists in the UK and has, since 2005, been manufacturing its own cavity wall bead at its Worcester-based Thermabead facility, where the first Fulton skid-mounted steam boiler system – the 30J model - was installed.
With business growing rapidly thanks to government improvement grants for energy-saving home insulation and DGI winning support to promote the only programme able to offer a 20% more efficient carbon-saver bead, the company quickly expanded its installer and processing divisions and now has a manufacturing plant in Manchester (using the first of the 40J-based boiler systems), with a third facility – known as ‘Project X’ – currently in the planning stages.
In response to demand for boilers with capacities greater than the 4,787 kg/h of its RBC range, Fulton Limited is launching the FB range of rugged, robust and reliable horizontal firetube boilers in Europe. The introduction means that Fulton can now offer customers a range of traditional three-pass, wetback firetube boilers that can be configured for gas, oil or dual-fuel installations and for either steam or hot water applications.
Commenting on the launch of the new horizontal firetube range, Fulton’s sales and marketing
manager Carl Knight says: “The FB range is ideal for a variety of applications including largescale
laundries that currently rely on Fulton horizontal boilers to provide a steady supply of steam for ironers, presses, washers and tunnels; as well as companies requiring steam or hot water for space heating; food, plastics and chemical processing; and pharmaceutical and biofuel production.”

For over twenty five years, Midland Linen Services has been providing table and bed linen and chef’s wear to universities, hotels, clubs and restaurants within a fifty mile radius of its Birmingham-based facility. In that time, the company’s boiler replacement policy has seen them purchase four steam boilers, but they have always stayed loyal to one manufacturer – Fulton!
When Midland Linen was founded in 1985, managing director Jeffrey Yapp approached Fulton and a 60E vertical gas-fired boiler was specified and installed to provide steam to heat water for the washing machines and produce steam for the calendar ironers and garment presses. In 1995 and 1997, to meet increasing demand, two more Fulton 60E boilers were installed and, in 2001, Midland Linen’s original 16 year old 60E was replaced with Fulton’s latest 60J vertical steam boiler.
Eleven years on, with demand still increasing and Midland Linen now operating three calendar ironers and eleven washing machines, the company has instigated its boiler replacement policy and again approached Fulton. On this occasion, the 60E gas-fired steam boiler installed in 1995 has been replaced with a second 60J, ensuring that Midland Linen continues to provide a disruption-free service to its customers.
When Imperial Tobacco was looking for a cost-effective solution to supply heating and hot water for its headquarters in Bristol, the project became a distinctly local affair for Fulton, a leading British manufacturer of steam, hot water and thermal fluid solutions.
As factory maintenance engineer Gary Withey explains: “The new skid-mounted steam boiler package was specified by our Bristol-based consulting engineers Hoarlea, built in Bristol by Fulton and installed by Spie Matthew Hall, also based in Bristol.”
Commenting on the new installation Gary says that although the old boiler house has been decommissioned and the factory demolished, the original offices remain and still feature the original steam coils and site services. It was therefore decided that a replacement steam boiler package was the cheapest solution for supplying domestic hot water and heating, rather than opting for a new hot water boiler, which would have required a completely new HVAC system for the offices.
Fulton Boiler Works has designed, supplied, installed and commissioned a fully-packaged, prefabricated steam plant room as part of a £2.8 million refurbishment programme for South Wales-based St Joseph’s Hospital.
The independent, purpose-built private hospital, which offers a range of services to both insured and self-funding patients, specified aFultonplant room because of its renowned durability, reliability, energy efficiency and the company’s after-sales support.
Steam from the bespoke plant room, which contains two Fulton50J vertical boilers, is being used to supply a secondary plant room containing a reverse osmosis hot water circulation system and hot soft-water plate heat exchanger, as well as two sterilisers and two instrument washer disinfectors in the hospital’s Sterilisation and Disinfection Unit. It is also being used for humidification and domestic hot water through two steam-to-water plate heat exchangers.
Commenting for St Joseph’s, hospital engineer Eddie Miller says: “Even though the hospital’s two existing 24-year-old electric steam generators were still operational and in good working order, they needed to be decommissioned at the same time as the old Theatre Sterile Supply Unit. We were aware that the new plant room had a lot to live up to, so had no hesitation in approachingFultonfor the programme.”
The plant room was designed by a team of engineers from Fulton and the hospital’s mechanical and electrical consulting engineers Hoare Lea Cardiff, using the latest CAD software.
Many of the problems associated with legionella in air conditioning and air handling plant are created by the injection of contaminated water into the airstream to increase relative humidity.
By injecting low-pressure steam, which is an inherently sterile medium, the risk of legionella developing is greatly reduced.
Fulton Limited manufactures a wide range of high-performance steam boilers, including the RBC Horizontal Boiler, with capacities from 14 to 4787 kg/h for electricity, gas and oil firing. Architects and consultants also regularly specifyFulton’s J Series and Electropack steam boilers to humidify air conditioning and air handling systems.
Fulton’s renowned gas- and oil-fired J Series vertical steam boiler has nine models covering outputs from 96 to 960 kg/h and operating pressures up to 10.34 bar. The tubeless design, invented byFulton, eliminates the coils and tubes traditionally used in steam raising plant and enables the boiler to raise its full steam output in just 20 minutes.
Fulton’s electric steam boiler range has benefited from the addition of two new boilers with the launch of the Europack 250 and the Europack 300, which have outputs of 250kw (400kg/h) and 300kW (480kg/h) respectively.
