Why is good quality steam crucial?
Good quality steam is essential for numerous industrial processes including heat transfer, sterilisation, and cleaning. Where high-quality dry steam is more efficient, can reduce energy costs, and maintain equipment performance and longevity by preventing scaling and corrosion, poor steam quality can contaminate products in industries like food, cause equipment failure, and compromise safety.
Efficiency
High-quality steam ensures optimum efficiency in various industrial processes and is often used for heat transfer, sterilisation and cleaning. Good quality dry steam transfers heat more effectively, leading to improved energy efficiency and reduced operating costs.
Product Quality
Steam can come into direct contact with many products, e.g. in the food and beverage industry, steam is used for cooking, pasteurisation and sterilisation. So if steam quality is poor, it can introduce contaminants, impurities or unpleasant flavours, compromising quality and safety.
Equipment Performance & Life
High-quality steam helps maintain the performance and longevity of process equipment. Steam that is free from impurities, including dissolved solids, minerals and particulate matter, reduces the risk of scaling, corrosion and fouling in steam boilers, heat exchangers and other equipment. This improves plant efficiency, minimises downtime for maintenance and extends operational life.
Safety
When not of good quality, steam can be hazardous and poor quality steam may contain impurities that can corrode/erode equipment leading to leaks, ruptures or other failures. Steam systems are usually not designed to accommodate additional liquid in steam, so water entrained in steam (wet steam) can cause erosion of valves and components within the steam system (wire drawn) and in extreme cases will cause water hammer (slugs of incompressible water travelling at excessive velocities) to occur through piping systems, which is extremely dangerous and can cause premature failure to, or even destruction of, valves and pipework in the steam system. Additionally, contaminants in steam can adversely affect the performance of safety devices (e.g. PRVs), compromising the overall safety of the system.
Process Control
Steam quality plays a vital role in maintaining precise control over manufacturing processes. For example, in chemical production or pharmaceutical manufacturing, precise temperature control is essential for achieving desired reaction rates and product consistency. Inaccurate or fluctuating steam quality can disrupt the temperature control mechanisms, resulting in variations in process and product quality.
Manufacturers and processors should employ measures including proper water treatment, chemical dosing and monitoring systems to ensure steam quality is within both the OEM’s and processes desired parameters, ultimately contributing to efficient and reliable operations.
